Andre Ethier's hitting streak ended quietly on Saturday night at Citi Field. There were no loud outs, no questionable calls by the umpires, and no hit-robbing plays by Mets fielders.
The Dodgers right fielder finished 0-for-4 with a walk in the Mets' 4-2 win, snapping a hitting streak of 30 games.
Ethier had two flyouts, a groundout and a strikeout, finishing one game shy of tying the Dodgers franchise record, and 26 games short of matching baseball's all-time mark of 56 games, set by Joe DiMaggio.
Ethier's last chance to keep the streak alive came in the top of the eighth inning.
With one out and James Loney on first base, Ethier flailed at a 2-2 slider from left-hander Tim Byrdak, going down on strikes.
The last major leaguer to hit safely in more than 30 consecutive games was Philadelphia's Chase Utley. Utley hit in 35 straight games from June 23 to Aug. 3, 2006. Teammate Jimmy Rollins hit in 36 straight in the 2005 season, the longest streak in the last six-plus seasons.
Six players have reached 30 games since 2005. The last four players to reach 30 games, including Ethier, have had their streaks snapped in the next contest.
Ethier, whose streak began on April 2, fell one game short of Willie Davis, who had a 31-game hitting streak for the Dodgers in 1969.
Ethier hit .383 (46-for-120) during the streak.
