WHAT IT MEANS: Carlos Beltran fit nicely in the No. 3 hole in the lineup with David Wright resting his banged-up upper back. Beltran homered three times for the first time in his career and tied a career high with six RBIs.

It was the eighth three-homer game in franchise history. The last one was produced by Jose Reyes at Philadelphia on Aug. 15, 2006.

Each of Beltran’s homers was a two-run shot that scored Willie Harris. Harris started at third base and walked three times. He also singled in the ninth inning ahead of Beltran’s final shot.

The Mets won 9-5 in the rubber game, which had been postponed from Wednesday, then delayed 130 minutes Thursday before Ubaldo Jimenez delivered the first pitch.

The switch-hitting Beltran has homered from both sides of the plate in a game eight times in his career. He has done so five times as a Met, tying Todd Hundley for the franchise record.

Beltran now has eight homers, taking over the team lead from Ike Davis (seven). Davis landed on the DL with a sprained left ankle and bone bruise. Beltran’s first five homers of the season had come at Citi Field.

Reyes delivered the other big blow with a two-out, bases-loaded single in the fourth that chased Jimenez (3.2 IP, 3 H, 5 ER, 6 BB, 3 K).

Colorado pitchers walked nine batters. The Mets had only six hits.

NIESE EFFORT: Jon Niese surrendered solo homers to Jonathan Herrera in the first and Todd Helton in the fourth. Niese departed for left-hander Mike O’Connor after pinch-hitter Alfredo Amezaga’s one-out RBI single in the seventh pulled Colorado within 7-3.

O’Connor then allowed both inherited runners to score, on Seth Smith’s double off the left-center wall. O’Connor walked Carlos Gonzalez with two out, but Taylor Buchholz narrowly preserved a 7-5 lead when he retired Troy Tulowitzki on a smoked lineout to left field.

Niese’s line: 6.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K.

BAY WATCH: Jason Bay snapped an 0-for-14 drought with a fourth-inning single. … Jason Pridie, who had reached base in each of his first 13 starts, had that streak end with an 0-for-4 game.

K-ROD TRACKER: Francisco Rodriguez finished his 13th game in a non-save situation. He needs to finish 42 of the Mets’ remaining 125 games for his contract to vest at $17.5 million for 2012. Rodriguez is on pace for 57 games finished, two beyond the trigger for the contract to kick in for next year. K-Rod has now made three straight one-inning appearances without allowing a baserunner.

Jason Isringhausen had allowed two runners to reach scoring position in the eighth, but Izzy rallied to strike out Jose Morales and retire former Oakland teammate Jason Giambi on a fly ball to center to preserve the 7-5 lead.

F-MART: Fernando Martinez, who replaced Davis on the active roster, popped out as a pinch-hitter against Matt Lindstrom to open the ninth.

WHAT’S NEXT: Dillon Gee (2-0, 3.80 ERA) makes his first start since officially assuming Chris Young’s roster spot when the Mets open a three-game series in Houston on Friday. Gee opposes right-hander Bud Norris (2-2, 3.16). At 14-23, the Astros have the National League’s worst record.

“He has a much better idea how to prepare now that he knows what role he’s in,” Terry Collins said about Gee. “The other day, even though he knew the day before that there was a possibility he was going to start [with Young’s shoulder ailing], it’s not the same as knowing you’re going to start. So he came with a little indecision, and then had to hurry his warm-ups.” The control-oriented Gee uncharacteristically walked three batters and hit two others while allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Dodgers in that start.
