Met 'pen leaks again

6/2/2011

The Mets’ sloppy play in the seventh inning masked another poor outing by the bullpen.

The Mets’ bullpen allowed four earned runs in three innings on Wednesday. In their last 10 games, the 'pen has allowed 32 earned runs in 25 1/3 innings (11.37 ERA).

Late-inning runs have cost the Mets dearly in recent games.

In each of their last five home losses, the Mets have had a lead in the seventh inning or later. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that ties a major-league record set by four other teams, most recently the 1998 Astros.

On Wednesday, Pedro Beato gave up three runs on three hits in an inning’s work.

Beato has been charged with runs in four of his last five appearances after opening his major league career without allowing an earned run in 18 2/3 innings.

“I’ve got to not to try to overpower people. I’ve just got to try to keep the ball on the ground,” Beato said.

HOMER DROUGHT SNAPPED: Looking for a bright spot from Wednesday’s debacle? Justin Turner hit a solo homer in the eighth to snap the Mets’ 10-game home run drought. The homer to left also snapped their 10-game homer drought at Citi Field.

The overall 10-game drought was the sixth-longest in history. The franchise mark for futility was set in 1980, when the Mets went 17 straight games without a homer.

FOR BAY, THAT’S THE WAY IT GOES: Jason Bay was robbed of an extra-base hit in the bottom of the first when Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen made a diving catch of Bay’s drive on the warning track in right-center.

What did Bay think when the ball was caught?

“Here we go again,” he said.

He added: “The way things are going for me, I kind of knew it was going to happen.”

In his second year of a four-year, $66 million contract, Bay is hitting .234 with two homers and 10 RBIs.
