Pridie comes through in pinch

Terry Collins called it an “uncomfortable” move. But it turned out to be the right one.

With the bases loaded and one out, Collins was forced to pinch-hit for pitcher Dillon Gee, who had shut out the Atlanta Braves for seven innings.

So he sent left-handed hitter Jason Pridie to face Braves starter Jair Jurrjens.

Pridie delivered a broken-bat flair into right field, driving in Jason Bay to break the scoreless tie. It was the first pinch-hit of his career. Jose Reyes then drilled a three-run triple off of Scott Proctor to give the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Pridie said he was gearing up for a fastball. He wasn’t sure what he hit from Jurrjens, but it landed in the right spot.

Earlier in the season, Pridie saw time as the Mets’ starting center fielder with Angel Pagan out due to a rib cage injury. With Pagan back, he is relegated to pinch-hitting and entering games as a defensive replacement in the late innings.

“It’s a tough role,” Pridie said.

But he made it look easy on Saturday night.

DAN THE MAN: Daniel Murphy went 2-for-4 on Saturday. He is hitting .446 (25-for-53) in his last 15 games. With Jason Bay demoted to the No. 6 hole, Murphy hit cleanup on Saturday.

"Is he the prototypical four hitter? No, he's not," Collins said. "But in that spot, what we've needed are hits and ... I think he's going to get us those hits."

TURN IT UP: Justin Turner’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning was his 20th RBI in the last 20 games. … Mets hurlers limited the Braves to four hits, the second-fewest single-game hits total this season (three-hitter on May 19 against Washington, which was also a Dillon Gee start.) This was also the Mets’ third shutout of the season.
