The Mets’ third stab at reaching .500 on this three-city road trip was the charm. After twice moving within a game of breakeven and then losing in Pittsburgh, the Mets moved to 34-34 with Wednesday’s 4-0 win against the Braves. It’s their first time at .500 since R.A. Dickey beat the Yankees on May 20 and the Mets moved to 22-22.

“Well, we’re here, but you’ve got to stay here now,” Terry Collins said. “The accomplishment is now continuing to push forward and move above .500. We got back here. It’s been a long road and a long, uphill battle. And I’m so proud of the way those guys have hung in there. Now we’ve got to move forward. We can’t just say, ‘OK, we got here.’ We’ve got to keep moving.”

Said Jason Bay: “Ultimately, it’s a stepping stone. While it’s not the end goal, we’re at that point. We’ve slipped back and gotten to that point before. So you’ve got to get there, but then we’ve got to get above it.”

The Mets occupy third place in the National League East, 8 games behind the Phillies. As for the wild card, the Mets are in sixth place, but only 3 games behind co-leaders St. Louis and Atlanta.
