The New York Yankees might not have any plans to trade for or to try to sign Jose Reyes, but the Mets shortstop isn’t paying any attention to the news. In fact, he hadn’t even heard that the Yankees don’t envision Reyes in pinstripes.

“I don’t worry about that, I play for the New York Mets,” Reyes said. “I don’t care what they say. I’m focused on this team.”

With Reyes hoping for a big payday, and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter’s mediocre performance thus far this season, there has been speculation that the Yankees could enter the mix for Reyes, who is a free agent at the end of the season. Reyes is hitting a career-best .335 this season with 26 stolen bases and 105 hits in 71 games.

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman told the New York Daily News on Wednesday night that Reyes is not going to become a Yankee, saying the team has no need at the position now or in the future. Cashman told the Daily News that backup Eduardo Nunez, who is currently starting at shortstop with Jeter on the disabled list, could be playing for a lot of teams in baseball. Jeter is hitting .260 while slugging just .324, while Nunez is hitting .241 and slugging .379.

As Cashman made his statement Wednesday, Reyes also recently informed the Mets that he will not negotiate a contract with the team during the season, hoping that it would prevent the issue from becoming a distraction for him. Despite his hopes, Reyes still found himself having to answer questions regarding his future and other teams’ interests in him before Thursday’s game against the Athletics.

“It’s tough when you have to answer the same questions every day,” Reyes said. “I’ve been answering the same questions since Spring Training. I just want to be focused and play baseball. I just want to be relaxed and to be able to enjoy the game as much as I can.”

He later added: “The other stuff takes care of itself. Right now, I just need to focus and play baseball and don’t worry about anything else.”
