Willie Harris' wife Trey, who unexpectedly went into labor at the five-month mark in her pregnancy, lost the baby, manager Terry Collins said.
Harris had caught a flight to New York late Wednesday to be with his wife.
Fernando Martinez has been temporarily promoted to fill Harris' roster spot after Harris was placed on leave.
Harris was transferred to the bereavement list, which is a three- to seven-day absence.
• Jon Niese will not learn the results of the Holter monitor readings of his heart rate until noon, but Collins said there is no indication the southpaw would be unable to make his Friday start. Niese experienced a rapid heartbeat during his last outing, at Texas.
"I'd be shocked if there was a red flag," Collins said. "We would have seen it by now."
• Ronny Paulino's back is barking, but Collins said he planned to have lefty-hitting Josh Thole face Justin Verlander anyway. The Yankees are throwing three right-handers this weekend, but Collins intimated Paulino may catch as many as two games, and that the back should not be an obstacle.
• Has Collins ever seen production like Jose Reyes' before? Well, yes, the manager said. Collins said Barry Bonds had a similar season in 1992 when Collins was the bullpen coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Jeff Bagwell had a similar season in 1994, during Collins' first season managing the Houston Astros.
"This guy is in that same class," Collins said. "Both of those guys were MVPs in those respective years."
Online voting for the All-Star Game closes at 11:59 p.m.
• Thursday marks the completion of the first half of the Mets' season -- 81 games. The Mets are in the midst of a stretch of playing five division leaders in a six-series span: the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. Only the Dodgers are not atop their division.
