With left fielder Jason Bay in a 3-for-30 slump, Mets manager Terry Collins was asked if he considered giving Bay a day off. With right fielder Carlos Beltran out of the lineup tonight with the flu, Collins couldn’t afford to have Bay out as well, but he wants Bay to keep at it during his slump.
Said Collins: “But I don’t think after the break, the way Jason’s swung before the break and then having a four-day week. He doesn’t need a rest, he needs to play, he needs to play to get back to the way he was playing before the break.”
Bay is at .234 and has just six home runs and 28 RBI on the season. Bay is batting .158 in his last 10 games and is hitting just .182 on this homestand. He had been 0-for-17 before singling Saturday against Philadelphia.
