Terry Collins said he expects to give Jose Reyes and David Wright days off at some point this week.
Reyes has played in 94 of the Mets' 110 games. Wright has played in all 12 games since returning from a lower-back injury. Collins is more likely to sit both stars during the final games of the Florida series rather than the weekend series against the wild-card leading Braves.
Reyes, who was hitting just .267 in the Mets’ last ten games entering play on Tuesday, worked in the batting cage with hitting coach Dave Hudgens on Tuesday afternoon to correct a couple of flaws the Mets identified in recent days. Collins said the flaws were causing Reyes to hit the ball in the air.
"We've picked up a couple things that Jose's doing," Collins said. "It has nothing to do with fatigue."
HAIR-RAISING: Collins wanted Scott Hairston in the cleanup hole Tuesday because of his recent power surge (he hit two homers on Sunday) and his prowess against lefties (.271 BA). Collins also believes Hairston provides the best protection for Wright, who is hitting in the No. 3 hole.
NO CHIP SHOT: Given the opportunity, Collins did not second guess third-base coach Chip Hale’s decision to send Reyes home from second base on Justin Turner's shallow single to right on Monday. Marlins right fielder Mike Stanton threw out Reyes by several feet. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Stanton's throw came in a few ticks above 95 mph.
"Chip read it and he said, 'I'm going to make this guy make a great throw' and he made a great throw," Collins said. "Once in a while, in our sport, you have to tip your cap to (the other) team."
