New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes left Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves in the bottom of the second inning with stiffness in his left hamstring. Reyes suffered a strain to his left hamstring last month which caused him to miss 15 days.

Reserve Willie Harris pinch-hit for Reyes. Harris remained in the game at second base and Justin Turner moved over to short stop.

Reyes, who grounded to third in his first at-bat, spent 15 days on the disabled list due to a hamstring strain, from July 3 - July 18.

Fortunately for Reyes and the Mets, the shortstop did not hurt the same hamstring that has given him trouble in the past.

A right hamstring injury limited him to just 36 games in 2009. In 2004, he played in only 54 games because of various leg injuries that were so bad the Mets tinkered with changing how he runs.

Any extended absence for Reyes would be crippling for the Mets, who are eight games behind the Braves in the race for the National League wild card.

Reyes entered play Sunday hitting an NL-leading .337 with a league-high 80 runs scored. He leads baseball with 16 triples and 50 multi-hit games and is second in the NL with 144 hits and 34 steals.

Reyes is also a free-agent at the end of the season. So if the injury is significant, it could affect his value. The Mets elected not to trade him at the deadline, presumably opting to put together a competitive bid to retain Reyes' services.

The Mets have been crippled by injuries this season, with Reyes, David Wright and Ike Davis missing significant time due to injury. Starter Chris Young is out for the season with a shoulder injury and Johan Santana has yet to return from shoulder surgery that was completed last September.
