With Jason Isringhausen having reached 300 saves, Bobby Parnell is now going to get groomed for the closing role. And Francisco Rodriguez, who is back at Citi Field this weekend with the Miwaukee Brewers, offers this analysis of Parnell as a closer candidate:

“That kid has great stuff and I love him to death," K-Rod said. "He's a guy who shows up to the stadium to prove himself, works hard day in and day out. Unfortunately, he's not getting the job done. He's leaving the ball up, not making quality pitches when he needs to. He's getting hit around a little bit.

“The only way you can find out if he is capable to get it done is let him do that job in the ninth inning. Throw him out in a tough situation and let him get experience. That's the only way they are going to find if he is capable or not.

“He has the tools and the mentality. He might have to get a little bit mean and start bossing people and get a little angry out there. ... When he has the ball they're going to hit whatever he wants, not what the hitter wants.”
