He had left Buffalo thinking his season was done, that the Mets would not call him back up to the majors for the final month of the season. A 39-hour trek had lied ahead to his home in Huntington Beach, Calif.
"Of course every one wants to get called up in September, especially when you're on the roster, so it was disappointing at first," Thayer said. "I got over it on my drive home but my initial reaction was I was disappointed at not being able to be called up at the end of the season."
In that Burger King, where he actually had reception on his phone, unlike most of his trip, the Mets buzzed and gave him the good news: he would be recalled to the major leagues.
He drove home to California, arriving around 9:30, said hello to his wife and kids, dropped his car off, got some quick sleep and awoke for a 6:30 a.m. flight. He arrived in New York at 9:30 and was in the clubhouse before Friday's game.
"I want to do good," Thayer said. "I've gone through the phase of being the new person and now it's time to go out there and get outs and have clean innings."
