Carlos Beltran may not remain with the San Francisco Giants in 2012. Regardless, he thinks the team should make a run at Jose Reyes as a free agent. In fact, Beltran believes a bat like Reyes is needed for him to want to re-sign with the Giants.

"The first option for this team should be finding a guy who's a leadoff batter," Beltran said in the San Francisco Chronicle. "Then, if you want to add another bat, I could be the second option.

"I think that's what I see from this year, the time that I've been here. We've had great pitching, a great bullpen. At the end of the day, the issue here has been, the team doesn't score runs. The only way you can manufacture runs is to have a guy at the top of the lineup who gets on base, steals bases and makes the job easier for the guys behind."

Beltran told the Chronicle's Henry Schulman about Reyes: "He's a great guy. A lot of people look at him playing around and jumping around and think he's not serious about the game. That guy works hard better than any person in baseball. He shows up and plays hard. He's an unbelievable player, a guy who makes a difference on a team, offensively, defensively, on the basepaths."

Still, the Giants may be more conservative with spending this offseason. Managing partner Bill Neukom was ousted this week.

Larry Baer, who is now slated to become Giants chief executive officer, told the Chronicle regarding high-priced free agents: "I don't think we wake up in the morning and say that's the first choice."
