WHAT IT MEANS: Tim Byrdak inherited the bases loaded from Josh Stinson with the Mets clinging to a one-run lead and surrendered a two-run double to pinch-hitter Ryan Theriot. After an intentional walk reloaded the bases, newly converted submariner D.J. Carrasco allowed a three-run triple to Adron Chambers in what eventually became a six-run frame as the Cardinals rallied from an early deficit to beat the Mets, 11-6.
Carrasco, despite his immense struggles in the first season of a two-year, $2.4 million deal, actually had previously stranded 20 of 23 inherited runners this season -- the fourth-best success rate in the National League (min. 20 runners).
The Mets suffered their 81st loss, ensuring they will not have a winning season.
St. Louis remained 2½ games behind the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card race.
The Mets had taken a 6-5 lead in the top half of the inning as Kyle McClellan issued a four-pitch walk to Angel Pagan with the bases loaded to force in the tiebreaking run. David Wright then struck out looking with the bases loaded to end the threat.
The Mets had built a 4-1 lead after the top of the third. Lucas Duda drove in his 38th second-half run, fifth most in franchise history for a rookie, and seven behind record-holder Carl Everett (45 in 1995). Mike Pelfrey’s RBI double gave the Mets a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Pelfrey tied Dillon Gee for the team RBI lead among pitchers with four.
Pelfrey’s line in a no-decision: 6 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 0 BB.
REYES TRACKER: Jose Reyes went 1-for-4 with two walks as his average remained at .331. NL batting leader Ryan Braun went 1-for-5 for Milwaukee against the Cubs as his average dipped to .332.
WHAT’S NEXT: Chris Schwinden (0-2, 5.40 ERA) makes his third major league start. The rookie right-hander opposes Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia (12-7, 3.68 ERA) Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. ET.
