In a formality that allows them to recoup draft picks if he signs elsewhere, the Mets offered arbitration to Jose Reyes on Wednesday, the deadline to extend such offers.

Assuming Reyes signs elsewhere, the Mets will now get two draft picks.

(Reyes will not accept arbitration because that would require him to return to the Mets on a one-year deal, at a salary set by an arbitrator if the sides could not agree before a hearing. ... He's aiming for a few more years than that.)

The Mets automatically get a draft pick created from thin air between the first and second rounds assuming Reyes leaves.

They also will get a top pick from the team that signs Reyes. In most cases, that's a first-round pick. But because the Marlins draft ninth overall and the top 15 picks are protected, the Mets would get Miami's second-round pick instead should Reyes take his talents to South Florida.

Draft-pick compensation changes next offseason under the new collective bargaining agreement. Only the top 10 first-round picks will be protected. And the way to collect a draft pick will be to offer a one-year contract to the departing player at the average of the top 125 salaries and have the player decline.
