Sandy Alderson said he hoped to bring back outfielder Mike Baxter on a minor league deal, even though the Queens product was cut loose at Tuesday's non-tender deadline along with Ronny Paulino.

Baxter, though, is a free agent and will be free to sign anywhere.

"We needed the roster spot," Alderson said about Baxter being dropped from the 40-man roster. "Right now we've still got roster issues. If we're able to conclude our free-agent acquisitions [Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch], that will take us back to 40. And then anything we do between now and the beginning of the season that will require a major league contract would be another roster spot. So we're pretty tight right now."
