Hairston returning to Mets

January, 5, 2012
Backup outfielder Scott Hairston is returning to the Mets on a major league deal, pending a physical.

Hairston's inaugural season with the Mets ended Aug. 23 when he suffered a left oblique strain in Philadelphia.

Hairston, 31, should be the primary righty-hitting backup behind starters Jason Bay, Andres Torres and Lucas Duda. He manned all three outfield positions last season, with 11 starts in right field, eight in center field and four in left field.

The Mets currently have lefty hitters Mike Baxter and Adam Loewen as well as right-hitting Vinny Rottino as fifth-outfielder candidates.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
