When pitchers head out for fundamental drills at 10 a.m. Thursday, you will not see Johan Santana with his peers.
Terry Collins said that while Santana will go through a relatively standard spring training, he will be given ample time to prepare for bullpen sessions and other pitching work without having to be burdened by drills.
Santana is scheduled to toss his third bullpen session of spring training at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
“As I told every guy who sat in this room this morning, ‘Look, this is a team thing. But the ultimate goal is to make sure every single guy gets ready,’” Collins said. “And, individually, that might mean they’ve got to do something different. Tomorrow Johan goes through his pre-throw routine, which takes basically two and a half hours. I said, ‘Look, the deal is, at 11:30, when we do our bullpens, you’re ready for the bullpen.’ So to send him out at 10 o’clock to have him catching groundballs -- the guy’s got I don’t know how many Gold Gloves in his garage -- it defeats the purpose of then having him come and have to go through a two-hour [pitching warm-up] routine to send him back out at noon. I said, ‘Make sure you’re ready at 11:30.’”
