Johan Santana said he is all set to make his fourth Grapefruit League start of spring training on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter. "I'm renting a space ship," quipped Santana, who may up his pitch count to 80.
Santana allowed five runs (four earned) in 2 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers, but the outing was promising because the southpaw's velocity climbed regularly to 89 mph and topped out at 91 mph. He threw 65 pitches.
Santana remains lined up to pitch Opening Day, April 5 against the Atlanta Braves.
Said Terry Collins: "Tomorrow will be another big test, because he's getting to that 80-, 90-pitch mark where in two days, how is he going to respond? ... He feels good. We'll just see how he gets through it."
