Batista official, Schwinden optioned

Miguel Batista officially has made the Mets bullpen, on the day the Mets were required to inform the 41-year-old right-hander of his fate. Chris Schwinden has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo, where he is slated to pitch in the Bisons' rotation.

The lone remaining roster decisions:

• Will Andres Torres (strained left calf) be ready for Opening Day? The expectation is Torres will be in the lineup Thursday against the Braves at Citi Field. He played this afternoon in a minor league game -- batting only -- and went 1-for-5. Scott Hairston would slide into the starting center field role and Vinny Rottino would make the team if Torres were to start the season on the DL.

• Will Tim Byrdak start the season on the DL? Probably so. But Byrdak is scheduled to pitch in his first game tomorrow, on the minor league side, as he recovers from March 13 surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Even if Byrdak lands on the DL, he would only be required to miss four games because of backdating rules. Daniel Herrera is expected to claim Byrdak's roster spot. Josh Edgin remains in camp, but is ticketed for Buffalo's bullpen.
