David Wright will undergo an X-ray before Tuesday's game and has been scratched from the lineup with a right pinkie injury.
He tried to grip a bat pregame in a cage, but was unable. Ronny Cedeno instead is starting at third base. Wright suffered the injury diving back into first base Monday night.
“We treated it last night,” Wright said. “And last night sleeping it swelled up. I came in today and we were working all day to try to get it ready to go. … I just don’t think I’d be worth very much today. I’d love to be out there. I just think Ronny will be head and shoulders better than I could be tonight.
“It would be very difficult to go out there and perform at even a decent level. Anybody else they put out there today would be able to perform a lot better than I could today. When I gripped the bat, I just knew it was going to be difficult. We’ve tried so many different things today, from taping it to putting pads on it, to trying to rig the bat where there was some extra padding where the hand would be. It wasn’t cooperating.”
Wright said Edwin Jackson’s pickoff throw in the third inning Monday caught him off guard after reaching first base on a single.
“I was going to run the first pitch, and he surprised me and threw over,” Wright said. “It was a little bit of a panic trying to get back to first, and I went in there a little bit too hard and jammed my pinkie into the bag.”
The new lineup:
Ruben Tejada, ss
Ronny Cedeno, 3b
Daniel Murphy, 2b
Jason Bay, lf
Lucas Duda, rf
Justin Turner, 1b
Scott Hairston, cf
Mike Nickeas, c
Dillon Gee, rhp
