What does a 7-3 start mean?

The good news is that in Mets history, it means good things.

The Mets have been 7-3 or better eight times in their history. The chart on the right shows their starts and their finishes in those respective seven seasons, which have been pretty impressive.

Every year in which the Mets have started 7-3 or better, they’ve finished at least 10 games over .500, with four of the seven (1986, 1988, 1999, 2006) resulting in postseason appearances.

That doesn’t necessarily hold true for all of baseball. Last season, the Rangers, Indians, Reds, Rockies, and Phillies all started 7-3 or better. But only the Rangers and Phillies finished above .500 from that group.
