Fracture could shorten Bay's Mets tenure

Jason Bay is due to earn $16 million apiece this season and next. But his Mets tenure is not necessarily complete after 2013.

Bay has a $17 million vesting option for 2014 that kicks in if he logs 500 plate appearances this season and next, or 600 plate appearances in 2013.

Landing on the disabled list obviously doesn't affect the latter way to vest. But it would raise the bar if the injury keeps Bay from reaching 500 plate appearances this season.

So far, Bay is sitting at 57 plate appearances.

For the sake of comparison, Bay had 509 plate appearances last season while appearing in 123 games.
