DL is a possiblity for Tejada

After taking a nasty face-first fall into the ground that could have caused multiple injuries, Ruben Tejada awaited the results of an MRI to find out the severity of his strained right quad.

Mets manager Terry Collins could not rule out the disabled list for Tejada. However, Collins hoped that Tejada would only be out a couple of days at most.

If that were the case, then Justin Turner, who has just three games of major league experience at short, would man the position. David Wright would be the backup shortstop. Vinny Rottino can also play the infield.

The Mets are expected to have the just-sent-down Jordany Valdespin in Philadelphia Monday in case they were to make a roster move. Valdespin, who was returned to Triple-A Saturday, can only be activated if Tejada or another injured player goes on the DL. If not, Valdespin has to wait 10 days before returning.

The Mets may try to hold out until the later in the week when Ronny Cedeno, DLed on April 23rd with rib strain, is eligible to come off.

Collins said he thought he could go three to five days without making a move. If so, then Turner, who has now played three major league games at short, would be the starter for the near-term.

"I believe so," Collins said. "I have David [Wright] behind him. I don't know how bad it is going to be. If they think it is going to be five or six days, then we would probably have to make some move to get somebody here because we have Ronny Cedeno who will be back by the end of the week."

A Mets spokesman said he didn't expect for the team to make any announcements until Monday.

With two outs in the fourth, Tejada bunted and on his sprint to first, he stumbled into the bag and, ultimately, did a face-plant. He laid motionless for a few moments.

"His toe got stuck in the clay," Collins said. "I thought he was embarrassed, to be honest. Then I walked out there and I was waiting for him to be laughing and he wasn't laughing. Then Ruben picked his head up and I saw his eye.

"I'm more concerned about his eye. He went face down. I told Ray [Ramirez, the head trainer] I thought that in two innings his eye is going swell shut. I'm concerned about that as I am the quad."
