Jerry Manuel, who suggested before Friday’s game that Carlos Beltran ought to be brought back to DH in the next week, was firing one-liners before and after the 5-1 win against the Baltimore Orioles.
At one point postgame, Manuel praised the organization’s front office for having such depth that R.A. Dickey and Hisanori Takahashi were available to step into the rotation.
“I think the organization did a good job in creating depth,” Manuel said. “I’ve said that a number of times.”
“Or,” Manuel continued, referring to spring training, “maybe we took the wrong people. You never know. We could have did that, too.”
Meanwhile, in a more serious mood, Manuel noted Dickey is in the rotation for the foreseeable future after going 4-0 in his first five starts.
“He has to stay put in that rotation,” Manuel said. “It would be hard to take him out.”
Dickey’s knuckleball had such fierce movement Friday while baffling Orioles hitters, catcher Rod Barajas had a difficult time, too.
“We almost put the center fielder behind home plate just to help him out,” Manuel kidded.
