Justin Turner left Monday’s game against the Phillies with a right-ankle sprain after getting caught in a third-inning rundown. Turner's departure forced David Wright to move to shortstop for only the second time in his major league career.

X-rays of Turner's ankle were negative, the team announced.

Wright handled his first chance, a leadoff grounder by Placido Polanco in the fifth inning, without issue.

The Mets are without primary shortstop Ruben Tejada, who is on the disabled list with a right quadriceps strain. He still is experiencing tenderness with the muscle and will not be activated until at least the weekend, Terry Collins said. Backup Ronny Cedeño is active but has been unavailable since Saturday because of a left calf strain.

Turner needed assistance leaving the field.

Wright had played shortstop in one other major league game, last Aug. 8 against the Atlanta Braves for the eighth inning, during a game in which Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy both departed with injuries. At the time, Wright said his last shortstop experience was at Hickory High School in Virginia.

Cedeño may be able to return Tuesday, but the Mets still will need protection at the position, even if that is the case, until Tejada returns.

Collins said last week that Omar Quintanilla is the best Triple-A option available, although the manager added that the Mets have a 40-man roster crunch and Quintanilla is not currently on the roster. Jordany Valdespin is on the 40-man roster and recently returned to Triple-A Buffalo, but Collins has said he does not see the rookie as a viable shortstop at this point. Valdespin recently has been working at second base at Triple-A Buffalo.

The Mets likely will need to soon create 40-man roster spots for the activation of Pedro Beato from the 60-day DL as well as for Chris Young.
