U.S. Presswire-The Star-Ledger/Tim FarrellThe chagrined look on Johan Santana's face expressed how the Mets felt after getting swept. The opposite of a no-hitter
Johan Santana matched the major league record for home runs allowed in the start following a no-hitter by yielding four. Elias noted that the record was previously set by Catfish Hunter for the 1968 Athletics.
Santana allowed two home runs in a game to a left-handed hitter (Robinson Cano) for the first time in his career.
Here’s the impact that facing a lineup like this in a ballpark like Yankee Stadium can have on Santana in a nutshell. On Friday, he gave up four home runs on the 40 pitches he threw that were in the middle-third or upper-third of the strike zone.
He’d given up four home runs on 558 such pitches thrown to other teams this season.
Double your Pleasure
As you may have heard on the Mets telecast, via the Elias Sports Bureau, Scott Hairston’s double gave the Mets a team-record streak of 33 straight games with a double. The Mets actually broke the record of 30, previously set in 2001, in the first game of this series.
The longest streak since the Mets inception in 1962 is 75 games by the 1996 Indians. The next-longest (and thus the NL best) in that span is 51 games, by the 1999 Braves.
Niese channels his inner Ollie … in a good way
Jonathon Niese threw seven innings without allowing an earned run in getting a no-decision on Sunday.
He’s the second Mets lefty starter to pitch at least seven scoreless innings against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The only other Mets lefty to do so was Oliver Perez in 2007.
Defense not up to Par(nell)
Bobby Parnell gave up four hits to four batters on Sunday against the Yankees. The hits were an infield hit by Derek Jeter (who went to second on an error by Omar Quintanilla) and three balls that found vacant spots between players or in front of them.
Of the 84 balls hit against Parnell that have stayed in the ballpark, he’s allowed 29 hits and had six other situations in which a hitter reached via error (most among relief pitchers in the majors). In other words, almost 42 percent of hitters have reached base against him. Major league average for a season usually ends up around 31 to 32 percent.
Liking Ike
On Sunday, Ike Davis became the third Met to get a go-ahead or game-tying RBI against the Yankees with the team trailing in the ninth inning or later. The other two are Matt Franco (game-winning hit vs Mariano Rivera in 1999) and Ronny Paulino (game-tying hit vs Rivera in 2011).
Victims of Russell Muscle
The walk-off home run by Yankees catcher Russell Martin to close out the series marked the first time that the Mets lost an interleague game on a walk-off home run.
It was the sixth loss in relief for Jon Rauch this season. He and John Franco (1991) are the only Mets relievers to lose that many games in relief this quickly (61 team games) into a season.
