LOS ANGELES -- The Mets ran themselves into two first-inning outs against ace Clayton Kershaw, and Ronny Cedeno, Justin Turner and Mike Nickeas committed errors on Sunday night. The result: Dillon Gee suffered a tough loss, getting charged with four runs (two earned) in six innings as the Dodgers salvaged the series finale of the four-game series with an 8-3 win.
"We didn't play good tonight," Terry Collins said. "Dillon pitched fine. We didn't help him. We didn't run the bases very well early. We didn't catch the ball. And then late some bases on balls got in the way, along with some bad fielding."
Andres Torres -- who had a pair of baserunning blunders Saturday, getting doubled off first on a flyout and then getting picked off by catcher A.J. Ellis -- had another rough time in the series finale. Torres was caught on a pickoff move by Kershaw in the first inning. Scott Hairston also ran into an out on the bases that frame, leaving the Mets with only a 1-0 lead after a half-inning.
"Right there, I just tried to go too quick, and he got me," Torres said. "He's got a really good move. ... I did some mistakes, but tomorrow is another day. I have to come back and try to do better."
Said Collins: "At that time, after the inning was over, I said we could have been up 3-0 here against this guy. Plus, if we also had his pitch count up to about 35 in the first inning, it might have been a difference, too. So that for sure hurt us."
Later, Nickeas missed a throw on a would-be 1-2-3 double play that would have ended the seventh with the Mets trailing by a run. Instead, two runs scored on the play, and two more scored afterward. The throw glanced off the end of Nickeas' glove.
"As catchers in those situations, we're taught to hang back and make sure we get a good, solid throw," Nickeas said. "Not that I think it was a poor throw. It bounced out a little early, and the ball cut a little bit on me, and I missed it."
Said Gee, summarizing the three-error game: "It's tough, just because you're battling out there. And you're getting the results you want and the groundballs and stuff. But sometimes it just doesn't go your way. So you've got to try to brush it off and get the next guy."
