Update: When asked about Nieuwenhuis after the game Tuesday night, Mets manager Terry Collins said he wasn't sure how serious the injury is. The doctors were examining Nieuwenhuis after the game.

"He hurt his hand swinging in batting practice," Collins said. "He tried to come in and get some treatment, and come back out, but he couldn’t swing."

Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis was scratched just prior to the start of Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, after suffering a right hand contusion during batting practice.

Nieuwenhuis was slated to bat seventh, and play center field. Andres Torres took his place in both spots.
