Game 68: Mets @ Yankees

3:49 p.m. And Chris Carter’s groundout to Mark Teixeira wraps up the Mets’ 5-3 loss to the Yanks. The Mets’ eight-game winning streak -- and the longest current streak in the majors - is snapped with the defeat.

The loss also snaps the team’s longest road win streak since June 2007.

Mets pitchers entered today 18-3 with a 2.49 ERA in their last 29 games, but Pelfrey’s start bucked that trend.

The 6-foot-7 righty allowed seven hits and five earned runs in seven innings to fall to 9-2.

Jose Reyes’ two home runs staked the Mets to leads of 1-0 and 3-1, but Pelfrey allowed the Yanks to tie it in the bottom of each inning.

3:38 p.m.: Ryota Igarashi got out of trouble by getting Jorge Posada to fly out, striking out Curtis Granderson and forcing Ramiro Pena to ground out. And it's Mariano time. Yankees 5, Mets 3

3:29 p.m.: Looked like Angel Pagan lost that Robinson Cano fly ball in the sun. Second and third, none out for Jorge Posada in the eighth.

3:26 p.m.: And for the 15,666,798th time, we hear Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" at the Stadium. It was a great fit in the fall of 2009, but it's time to put that track to bed.

3:20 p.m.: Mark Teixeira recovers nicely to get Jose Reyes on a grounder to first for the second out of the eighth. Angel Pagan follows with a double to right but Joba Chamberlain gets David Wright to strike out swinging on a 1-2 slider to end the inning. Third strikeout of the day for Wright. Rod Barajas in to catch and Ryota Igarashi on the mound for the Mets in the bottom of the eighth. Yankees 5, Mets 3

3:16 p.m.: Joba Chamberlain in for Hughes. Jesus Feliciano pinch hits for Henry Blanco to open the eighth.

3:14 p.m.: Nice play by Mike Pelfrey to get over to first after Ike Davis bobbled Mark Teixeira's grounder. Davis fed Pelfrey in time to get Tex and end the seventh. Yankees 5, Mets 3

3:07 p.m.: Mets go down 1-2-3 in the seventh. Yankees 5, Mets 3

3:01 p.m.: Heckuva play by Reyes to throw Russo out on a soft grounder to short to end the sixth. Reyes' homers stand out today, but his defense has been stellar all season. He's fielding at a .984 clip so far in 2010, which would be the highest mark of his career if he finished the year on the same number.

2:51 p.m.: Jason Bay grounds into a 5-4-3 double play to end the sixth, the second of the day for the Mets. Yankees 5, Mets 3

2:46 p.m.: Angel Pagan singles to lead off the sixth. He's now 11-for-32 on the Mets road trip. David Wright follows with a weak pop-out to second. The Mets third baseman is 0-3 with two strikeouts. Two out and one on for Ike Davis.

2:40 p.m.: Mike Pelfrey puts the Yankees away in order in the bottom of the fifth. It's the first time he's retired the Bombers in order today. The 6-foot-7 righty has thrown 82 pitches through five innings. Fernando Nieve was warming in the Met bullpen when Pelfrey was in trouble in the fourth, but it doesn't look like anyone's warming now so look for Pelfrey to come out for the bottom of the sixth.

2:34 p.m.: By the crowd reaction, you'd think that Jose Reyes strikeout just ended a Yankee win. All it did was end the fifth, as Hughes kept Reyes in the ballpark for the first time today.Yankees 5, Mets 3

2:29 p.m.: With that one-out single, Alex Cora has six hits in his last 10 at-bats. Boobirds out for Jose Reyes, who's looking for home run No. 3 today.

2:18 p.m.: No doubt about that one for Curtis Granderson, who hit Mike Pelfrey's hanging curveball about 20 rows back in the right-field bleachers to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead. It was Granderson's sixth of the year and drove in Jorge Posada, who opened the inning with a walk. Pelfrey snapped his glove down in disgust after getting the ball back from Henry Blanco. Neither of the aces-in-training is particularly sharp today. Yankees 5, Mets 3

2:15 p.m.: Henry Blanco out to chat with Pelfrey after a first-pitch fastball to Curtis Granderson sails up and away in the bottom of the fourth.

2:12 p.m.: Mets go down in order in the top of the fourth. It's the first 1-2-3 inning of the ballgame. Mets 3, Yankees 3

2:05 p.m.: Robinson Cano running at about 35 percent on that groundball behind second base. Jose Reyes would have had a tough time getting Cano if he were running at full speed, but instead got the second baseman by a few feet at first to end the third. Mets 3, Yankees 3

2:02 p.m.: Mark Teixeira drills Mike Pelfrey's 2-1 changeup deep over the right field wall to tie the game at 3-3. It's his 11th homer of the year and just the fourth allowed by Pelfrey. The ball hit the railing in righ-center and bounced into the bull-pen.

1:58 p.m.: Mike Pelfrey struggling to retire Brett Gardner today. Two hard-hit balls in two-at bats for the Yankee left fielder, the latest one an infield single off of Pelfrey's glove. But the Mets righty is bailed out by Ike Davis, who makes a great stab on Nick Swisher's scorching grounder to his right. Davis dives, fields the ball and steps on the bag to retire Swisher. Gardner at second with one out and Teixeira at the plate.

1:54 p.m.: Angel Pagan caught stealing for the second time in two games. Phil Hughes strikes out David Wright on a 1-2 fastball to end the third. Mets 3, Yankees 1

1:50 p.m.: It's "Hip, Hip Jose!" Day in the Bronx thus far. Jose Reyes hits another home run to right off of Phil Hughes, this one a two-run shot scoring Henry Blanco with one out in the third. It's Reyes' sixth career multi-homer game and his first since May 26, 2008 against the Marlins. The Mets entered today's game 26-6 when Reyes scores at least one run. Mets 3, Yankees 1.

1:45 p.m.: Robinson Cano adds to his Gold Glove candidacy with a nice stab of Alex Cora's liner.

1:45 p.m.: Kevin Russo flies out to right to end the second. Mets 1, Yankees 1

1:42 p.m.: Curtis Granderson beats out Reyes' relay throw on a double-play attempt to keep the inning alive for Ramiro Pena. Mike Pelfrey falls behind, 3-1, to Pena, who singles to left to extend the inning. Four hits allowed by Pelfrey in an inning and two-thirds.

1:30 p.m.: Chris Carter grounds into a double play and Jeff Francoeur flies out to Swisher to end the top of the second. Mets 1, Yankees 1

1:23 p.m.: Brett Gardner opens the inning with a single, advances to third on Nick Swisher's long single to right and scores on Mark Teixeira's 4-6-3 double play. Mets 1, Yankees 1

1:16 p.m.: Angel Pagan flies out to left, David Wright strikes out and Ike Davis flies to center to end the inning. Mets 1, Yankees 0

1:10 p.m.: Jose Reyes hit Phil Hughes' second pitch of the afternoon into the right-field seats for his fourth home run of the year. That is Reyes' second leadoff homer of the year and the first time a Met has led off a game against the Yankees with a home run. Mets 1, Yankees 0.
