Omar Quintanilla has been traded to the Baltimore Orioles for cash.

Quintanilla had been designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for the activation of Jason Bay from the disabled list.

Mets officials had been concerned they would lose Quintanilla off waivers if they tried to pass him through to send him to Triple-A Buffalo, so they DFA'd him to buy time and now have dealt him to Baltimore.

Quintanilla, 30, signed as a minor league free agent on Jan. 3 after previous stops with Colorado and Texas. He hit .257 with one homer, four RBIs and eight walks in 80 plate appearances and started 21 games at shortstop this season with the Mets.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
