PHOENIX -- Terry Collins confirmed Thursday that Jeremy Hefner will remain the placeholder for Johan Santana's spot in the rotation.

Hefner allowed a pair of solo homers in the second inning Wednesday against the Nationals at Citi Field, but ended up limiting Washington to three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in six innings. He was charged with the loss.

The Mets are eyeing Aug. 8 or 9 against the Marlins in Queens for Santana's return, which creates the opportunity for two road-trip starts by Hefner.
