PHOENIX -- General manager Sandy Alderson's current talks center on prospective trades that would return players under control and beneficial to the major league team in 2013, a team insider acknowledged.

The source added that no deals were considered imminent as Tuesday's trade deadline approaches.

Terry Collins echoed that sentiment. Asked if anything appeared close, the manager said: "Not that I'm aware of."

A major league source said the Tigers approached the Mets about Scott Hairston on Friday. But the source downplayed a potential deal, saying: "Nothing I know of was accomplished." Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger also cited the Braves and the Giants as having dialogue with the Mets about Hairston.

The reason it would make sense to trade Hairston is because he is a free agent after the season.

So why not just sign Hairston now for 2013 and beyond? That's apparently not happening.

Hairston told ESPNNewYork.com that there has been no dialogue about an extension.

Tim Byrdak, like Hairston, is in the final year of a deal and should be generating interest from other organizations.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
