SAN FRANCISCO -- There are no absolutes. But Terry Collins reiterated after Scott Hairston’s two-homer game Monday lifted the Mets to an 8-7, 10-inning win that he believes Hairston will still be with the club after Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.
“I’m really hoping he’s in uniform, and I have no reason to believe he won’t be,” Collins said. “I know if he is moved it’s for a piece that’s going to genuinely help us -- make us get better. So I hope he’s still here.”
Said Hairston: “I’m expecting to be in the dugout tomorrow. Definitely. I really can’t foresee the future. I’m just going to go back to the hotel and relax and watch a little TV and not think about that, pretty much. That’s the plan right now.”
Hairston has received texts from friends with rumors, but nothing substantive from his agent, he indicated.
“Nothing has happened, and I’m happy here,” he said. “That’s all matters right now. I would figure my agent would call me or text me if something was significant. Nothing has been significant yet. I’m content where I’m at. Like I’ve said, if you were to ask me if something was going to happen, I don’t know. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
“I’ve had numerous friends send me texts telling me about the Tigers and the Rangers and the Giants and the Braves,” Hairston continued. “But I really haven’t heard anything specifically. It’s always good to be liked and wanted. I’m happy about that. Better than the other way around.”
Told the Braves had acquired Reed Johnson and they probably could be scratched off his friends’ lists, Hairston said: “That’s a good move by them.”
Both of Hairston’s homers Monday came against right-handers -- off Sergio Romo, then Santiago Castilla.
Hairston entered the game hitting only .196 with three homers against right-handed pitching this season. Last year six of his seven homers actually came against righties, albeit with a .216 average.
“I don’t know what to say about that. I guess I’ve been taking bad swings off righties -- maybe being too aggressive,” Hairston said. “But all that’s in the past. I’m just trying to move forward and just get good pitches to hit.”
