The plan mapped out by Terry Collins and Dan Warthen for R.A. Dickey to make starts on short rest has been pulled off the table, the manager told ESPNNewYork.com.

Using Dickey on short rest made some sense if the Mets were in wild-card contention, but the team now enters Dickey's Thursday afternoon start 10½ games off the wild-card pace, so there is no sense increasing Dickey's workload and risking an injury that potentially affects 2013.

Collins plans to strategically slot Jeremy Hefner in for spot starts if he needs to give Johan Santana, Chris Young or another pitcher extra rest.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
