The Mets optioned Rob Johnson to Triple-A Buffalo before Wednesday's game in Cincinnati, clearing a 25-man roster spot for the activation of Kelly Shoppach, who was acquired from Boston on Tuesday for a player to be named.

Johnson is hitting .250 with four RBIs in 52 at-bats at the major league level this season. He also tossed a scoreless inning at Toronto.

Rosters expand Sept. 1, so Johnson potentially could return at that point.

Shoppach will wear No. 6.
