Jenrry Mejia (0-0, 4.50 ERA) makes his first start in exactly two years on Saturday when he faces RHP Shaun Marcum (5-4, 3.71 ERA) in Game 2 of the three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Mejia, who has never faced the Brewers, last started Sept. 15, 2010, against Pittsburgh. He allowed nine hits, six runs in four innings with a walk and a strikeout and took the loss as the Phillies beat the Mets 8-4.
Mejia thinks it’s a chance to prove he can be a starter.
“That’s what I’m looking forward (to),” he said. “I want to show them I want to be a starter. I can do my job like a starter.”
Asked why he thinks that’s the case, he didn’t hesitate.
“I have a little bit more control about my pitches,” the 22 year-old right-hander said. “Now, I’m thinking about what I’m throwing.”
Recalled from Triple-A Buffalo for a third time on July 21, his only appearance was Sept. 7 when he pitched two innings in relief against Atlanta. He struck out one, but allowed Jason Heyward’s 25th home run of the season, a solo shot in the 4th inning, in a 3-0 loss to the Braves.
