Adam Loewen produced a two-run homer in the second inning and finished 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs as Canada reached the World Baseball Classic with an 11-1 win against Germany in the championship game of a qualifier in Regensburg, Germany, on Monday.
Loewen competed with Mike Baxter for a backup outfield spot with the Mets out of spring training and spent the season with Triple-A Buffalo.
Mets farmhand Kai Gronauer started at catcher for Germany and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. He hit .182 in qualifying play.
Former Mets farmhands Shawn Bowman and Jon Malo started on the left side of the infield for Canada throughout the tournament. When the WBC takes place during spring training, the Canadian team will have major leaguers available to compete, including potentially Jason Bay.
Spain beat Israel in the final of the other qualifier held this week, in Jupiter, Fla. Two more qualifying tournaments will be held in November, including in Panama, with Ruben Tejada and Manny Acosta due to compete for the host country.
