Dickey needs surgery for abdominal tear

MIAMI -- R.A. Dickey will undergo surgery Oct. 18 in Philadelphia to repair a torn abdominal muscle.

Dickey said he originally injured the muscle on a cold night against the Phillies on April 13. The pain was manageable throughout the season, although he recognized the eventual need for surgery a couple of months ago. In his final 2012 start on Tuesday night, the Cy Young candidate felt the tear potentially worsen in the second inning and gutted through the remainder of his outing.
