WHAT IT MEANS: Andres Torres, Scott Hairston and Ike Davis homered and the Mets completed their 2012 season with a 4-2 win against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday afternoon. Jeremy Hefner took a scoreless effort into the sixth and ultimately was charged with two runs in 7 1/3 innings. Manny Acosta inherited the bases loaded with two out in the eighth and coaxed a soft lineout from Donovan Solano to end the threat. Bobby Parnell notched his seventh save, a new career high.
The Mets’ final record: 74-88, good for fourth place in the National League East for a fourth straight season.
Davis finished the season with 32 homers, while Hairston reached 20. Hairston became the second player in franchise history to reach that plateau in fewer than 400 plate appearances, joining Richard Hidalgo (21 in 359 PAs after joining Mets in a trade in 2004).
OUCH: Lucas Duda was struck in the back of the helmet with an eighth-inning pitch from Dan Jennings. Duda left the game.
WHAT’S NEXT: The offseason.
Mets pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie, Fla., for spring training Feb. 13. Position players report five days later. The first Grapefruit League game is expected to be Feb. 23.
Other relevant dates:
The GM Meetings, which lay the groundwork for trades, are Nov. 6-9 in Palm Springs, Calif.
The NL Cy Young, along with all the other awards, are due to be announced Nov. 14, for the first time as part of a made-for-TV event.
The winter meetings will be held Dec. 3-6 in Nashville.
