Winter ball has started in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, and there's only limited involvement from Mets personnel early in the season.

According to Mets officials, Jordany Valdespin (Licey) and outfielder Raul Reyes (Cibao) currently are playing in the Dominican Republic and left-hander Justin Hampson (Aragua), infielder Wilmer Flores (Margarita) and shortstop Oswaldo Navarro (Lara) are playing in Venezuela.

Although Terry Collins indicated at the end of the Mets' season that Valdespin was expected to play second base in winter ball, he started on Sunday's Opening Day in right field.

Justin Turner is due to join Escogido in the Dominican Republic the first week in November. Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia also are due to pitch in that country.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
