Fred Lewis intends to become a free agent after being removed from the Mets' 40-man roster.

Fred Lewis plans to become a free agent after clearing waivers and being removed from the Mets' 40-man roster, a major league official said.

Lewis had yet to file the formal paperwork, but his agent has indicated to the Mets he intends to become a free agent.

Lewis, 31, went 3-for-20 with four walks with the Mets after a September call-up. He was rewarded with the promotion after hitting .294 with 13 homers, 45 RBIs and 25 steals in 419 at-bats with Triple-A Buffalo.

Over seven seasons, Lewis also has played for the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
