NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Free agent Scott Hairston told ESPNNewYork.com on Monday he believed a reunion with the Mets was "probable."

Mets insiders actually feel similarly optimistic, although there are no assurances.

Many of the other suitors for Hairston are looking at him for a bench role, with pinch-hitting the primary responsibility. But after hitting 20 homers in 377 at-bats last season, Hairston desires a larger role.

The Mets, whose outfield currently consists of lefty hitters Lucas Duda, Mike Baxter and Kirk Nieuwenhuis, are in a far better position to offer a large role for Hairston.
