Game 87: Braves @ Mets

7:15 p.m.: The Mets are blanked, 4-0. They fall five games behind the Braves in the NL East entering Sunday's series finale.

7:10 p.m.: Billy Wagner on for the final three outs against the Mets. Bobby Cox uses the closer with a four-run lead.

6:14 p.m.: Angel Pagan is 3-for-3 after a leadoff single in the sixth. Hisanori Takahashi tossed the top half of the inning for the Mets.

5:51 p.m.: Elmer Dessens retires Yunel Escobar on a 6-4-3 double play that scores a run and makes it 3-0 Braves. Tim Hudson then doubles to score a run and close the book on Mike Pelfrey. It's 4-0.

5:47 p.m.: Omar Infante is 3-for-3 on the day and 7-for-8 in the series. He delivers the fifth straight single by the Braves to open the fifth inning and chases Mike Pelfrey. The Braves lead, 2-0, with the bases loaded and none out. Pelfrey surrendered 12 hits, matching a career high. He also allowed 12 on June 30 against the Marlins in San Juan. Elmer Dessens enters. Pelfrey was knocked out in the fifth inning for a third straight start.

5:42 p.m.: With their 10th hit, the Braves finally produce a run. Chipper Jones, Brian McCann and Troy Glaus consecutively single to open the fifth. Glaus' single to left field scores Jones with the game's opening run. Mike Pelfrey may be in his last inning. He's already at 87 pitches.

5:28 p.m.: The Mets escape a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth as Melky Cabrera delivers a grounder to Ike Davis, who steps on first for the final out. No score, middle fourth. Mike Pelfrey is at 77 pitches, though.

5:26 p.m.: Martin Prado fouls a ball off his left shin. After a visit from training staff, he hits a comebacker to Mike Pelfrey, who throws to the plate to initiate a double play. Second and third, none out, none in for the Braves in the fourth.

5:22 p.m.: Mike Pelfrey gets into trouble in the fourth without getting hit very hard. Jose Reyes double-clutches an inning-opening grounder and Omar Infante beats it out for an infield single that makes him 6-for-7 in the series. Yunel Escobar then has the hardest-hit ball, a single by David Wright at third base. Tim Hudson follows by poppoing up a bunt in front of the plate. Ike Davis dives for it, but it kicks off his glove and rolls into foul territory for another infield single. Bases loaded, none out.

4:50 p.m.: Mike Pelfrey has stranded five runners through two innings. He left the bases loaded in the second inning by retiring Melky Cabrera on a weak comebacker. Still, Pelfrey has required 46 pitches to complete two innings. Mets and Braves scoreless, middle second.

Game notes: Jose Reyes again tried batting left-handed during batting practice Saturday. Jerry Manuel said the shortstop belongs in the lineup, even with a right oblique issue that limits him to hitting right-handed, because neither Ruben Tejada (1-for-last-21) nor Alex Cora is excelling offensively. ... Manuel said he would prefer only carrying two catchers when the Mets resume play after the break, but he's unusure if that's possible because of nagging health issues with Rod Barajas and Henry Blanco. ... Binghamton catcher Mike Nickeas will replace promoted Nick Evans in Wednesday's Double-A Eastern League All-Star game.
