Source: Maine to stay in rotation

4/14/2010

Right-hander John Maine will remain in the rotation and make Sunday's start against the St. Louis Cardinals on turn, a source tells ESPNNewYork. Maine matched a career high by allowing eight runs in three innings Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies. That performance lifted Maine's ERA to 13.50 after two starts.

The ESPN-televised Sunday night appearance opposite Adam Wainwright could be Maine's final appearance though in what appears will be manager Jerry Manuel's three-strikes-and-he's-out approach to the rotation.

Maine, who insists he's healthy after two seasons of shoulder woes, has not rediscovered the mid-90s velocity he enjoyed while winning 15 games in 2007. His velocity has regularly settled in at 88 mph.

“I very rarely pitch like this, get hit around and things like that,” Maine said after Tuesday's loss. "It's frustating. It's hard. I'm doing my stuff in between starts. I'm doing the right things. I just can't put it together. I've thrown good off-speed pitches. I think the biggest thing is I know my fastball needs to get down. I know that's probably the biggest thing. That's something I've got to work on."
