LAS VEGAS -- David Wright was supposed to be the target of fan and announcer venom this weekend in Pittsburgh for failing to select Pedro Alvarez for the Home Run Derby.

Well, Alvarez is now in the competition, after Carlos Gonzalez withdrew with a sprained right middle finger, MLB announced.

Alvarez is a New York native who graduated from Horace Mann High School in the Bronx.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
