WASHINGTON -- Kirk Nieuwenhuis was dispatched to Triple-A Las Vegas after Friday's nightcap, allowing the Mets to keep Jenrry Mejia and operate with a six-man rotation.

The Mets will have only four bench players, which means they must have faith in Eric Young Jr.'s health, despite the outfielder sitting out Friday's games with a right-knee issue.

Nieuwenhuis was hitless in his final 15 at-bats before the demotion and is hitting only .189 at the major league level this season.

Terry Collins had said between games Friday that Juan Lagares was ready to become the full-time center fielder.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
