Entering a four-game series at Marlins Park, the Mets are 3-8 this season against Miami.
“Obviously their record, I know that they’ve had a tough start,” Terry Collins said. “But I’ll tell you one thing they’ve done is something a lot of teams want to do: And that is, when they’ve made deals, they have gotten good young players. And those young players, they are formidable.
“You look at their pitching staff, they’re all young. But man, I tell you what, those are plus, plus arms with plus, plus stuff. And when you play them in their park, they’re tough.
“They’ve lost games, but they’ve lost games that are close. So you’ve got to score. The times we’ve played them, we haven't scored. They’re holding us down to one or two runs and that’s it. We’re losing games 2-1, 3-2. You’ve got to put some runs on the board, but they’ve pitched great against us.”
John Pierson is due to make his debut as Marlins interim hitting coach, after Tino Martinez resigned Sunday amid allegations he was physically and verbally abusive to players.
The Marlins (40-63), despite occupying last place in the NL East, actually are 27-22 since May 31.
