TC: 'We don't drive runs in ... No secret'

August, 1, 2013

Matt Harvey may have been the focal point of Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Miami Marlins, but the bottom line is this: Tom Koehler, A.J. Ramos and Steve Cishek combined to shut out the Mets.

After scoring 11 runs in the series opener in D.C., the Mets mustered only 15 runs over the next seven games of the trip. They scored one run or fewer four times.

"We don't drive runs in. There's no secret," Terry Collins said. "If I knew what it was, we'd fix it. Guys don't drive them in. We're not driving them in. That's pretty much the basic line. There's nothing wrong with the approach. We're just not taking good swings on the pitches we can hit. We're fouling pitches off that we should be hitting. Therefore we're not driving them in."

The poster child Thursday: Ike Davis.

In the first inning, Davis struck out on a fastball from Koehler to strand two. Two innings later, he popped out in foul territory, also on a fastball, to leave the bases loaded.
Davis hit .227 (5-for-22) on the trip.

"Both of them are frustrating, obviously, because you want to get a big hit in that situation," Davis said. "... He made some good pitches, and I couldn't really sit on his fastball because his curveball is pretty good. I just happened to be a little tardy on the fastballs.

"Obviously, if I knew he was going to throw me a fastball 0-2 instead of a nasty breaking ball that I would have had to stay back on, I probably would have had a better swing at it. But that's the way it goes. I had better at-bats later in the game, but those are the big ones that I didn't get."
