Hawkins uncomfortable, but won't wear cup

August, 15, 2013
SAN DIEGO -- LaTroy Hawkins remained uncomfortable a day after getting struck in the groin with a comebacker at Dodger Stadium. Hawkins planned to throw pregame, but was pessimistic he would be available for Thursday night's series opener against the San Diego Padres.

"I ain't played catch, but I doubt it," Hawkins said about his availability.

Terry Collins indicated Gonzalez Germen or David Aardsma likely would be his closer.

Hawkins, in good spirits even though it was painful to laugh, lightheartedly recounted the bus trip from Los Angeles to San Diego, which proved to be painful when there was a bump in the road.

"Once we got out of the L.A. area with all the bumps -- it seemed like the bus driver hit every bump he could find -- it was fine," Hawkins said. "It was smooth sailing. But I iced all the way."

Hawkins said the treatment is limited to icing. He added he does not plan to start using a cup at 40 years old. He noted plenty of other pitchers do not use one, either, because it needs constant adjustment while twisting during the delivery. Hawkins suggested a cup may not have withstood the direct shot anyway.

"I never have. I never will," Hawkins said. "I tried it a couple of times in the minor leagues. It wasn't comfortable. I've thrown a lot of innings. I've been in a lot of ballgames. This is the first time I got hit. It won't change."

Hawkins said his cell phone was inundated with messages.

"I've got my daughter making jokes. I've got everybody making jokes," he said. "I got more text messages this morning than I've had in a long time."

Hawkins said he did not need to see a replay of the one-hopper off the bat of Jerry Hairston Jr.

"I've got it right here," he said, pointing at his brain. "I don't need to see a replay. I know where it got me at. It could have went to the left or right. No. It got me dead-on. But it's not the end of the world. I won't be wearing a cup. It's not going to happen. I haven't worn one in 20 years. I'm not going to wear one now. Me and my wife are done having kids, so we're good. Twelve years ago I would have. My daughter will be 12 tomorrow."

On why a pitcher would not want to wear a cup, Hawkins added: "You know it's there, and it's always moving. You want to be as comfortable as possible. You don't want to have to readjust every time."
